$350.00 to spend
for my school library
Oooh – I love children’s books.
Here is the list of books as requested – I was buying for upper elementary to Jr High level.
The Luckiest Girl ( I love these Beverly Cleary remakes with the bright new covers. The books look like the typical YA lit but they are so much more innocent and wholesome. Having said that, I will admit that I haven’t read this particular book yet but I have great faith in Beverly Cleary!)
A Song For Summer by Eva Ibbotson – I love this author. This book is written for an older audience. It’s on my bedside table waiting for me. I usually read most of the books before I put them on the shelves.
Full colour gift box edition of The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe and The Magician’s Nephew for $12.99!! You can’t have too many copies of these books.
Framed by Frank Cottrell Boyce – I liked Millions
Red Sea by Diane Tullson – an interesting looking survival story.
Behind the Curtain and Down The Rabbit Hole by Peter Abrahams – mysteries
Eragon – movie edition
Leslie McFarlane’s Hockey Stories and The Spectacular Sidney Crosby Hockey in Canada series (a lot of hockey fans in my library)
No Shame No Fear by Ann Turnbull – historical novel
So You Want To be Wizard and Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane (reviews say a combination of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and Harry Potter … we’ll see.)
Dragon’s Blood by Jane Yolen – good author
The Last Holiday Concert by Andrew Clements – funny school stories
Howliday Inn, Bunnicula The Celery Stalks at Midnight by James Howe (replacing some well-loved and worn out copies)
The Book Thief (I have a feeling I may regret this $24.95 purchase)
The Wind Tamer by P. R. Morrison – looks promising but I haven’t a clue.
Shug by Jenny Han – I’m on page 21- so far so good.
Gatty’s Tale by Kevin Crossley-Holland – medieval novel – has a beautiful book jacket and a map on the inside cover – I’m a sucker for maps.
Superman Returns, Spiderman, Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook, Flight and a Baby-Sitters Club book (testing out the graphic novel waters – in my day they were called comics but no longer)
Chicken Soup for The Kid’s Soul – my kids love these short stories.
Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel (replacement for first book in a very popular trilogy)
Monsoon Summer by Mitali Perkins (second copy of one of my favourites)
I can’t give recommendations yet because I haven’t read them all. I go by reviews and a quick scan. Most of my book order is done at a special ordering workshop, when all Island teacher-librarians meet and go through the catalogues choosing books that support the themes in different grade levels. This was a little “left-over” money from that order. Spending it was fun, although tiring, believe or not – even for this book-lover.
