of buckets and baskets

This was the picture on the front page of The Guardian – our island newspaper –

with the headline: “Rain comes down in buckets”

It was like a solid sheet of rain and the accompanying thunder and lightning were impressive.

What’s a beachy girl to do in when the weather is so uncooperative?

When I was little girl, I would get my bathing suit on and run around in the yard.

I’d even put my head under the drain spout to get the full swimming effect. 🙂

I don’t know how that would go over in the community if I did it now …

So instead, I have a few indoor projects to tackle.

Last week I cleaned and organized my freezer – a good job done.

This is the latest task.

I have photo albums. And I had a great system for organizing them.

Every time I was expecting a new little one for our family, I knew that there would be  lots of pictures.

So I always made sure that the photo albums were updated – everything neat and orderly – ready for the new baby and all the new pictures. It worked perfectly.

As long as the babies kept coming…

I managed to haphazardly put some photo albums together but without the new baby inspiration I was falling drastically behind. I had to come up with another plan. So I bought a box and put all the photos in the box

and there it sat under my bed – in one place but very unorganized.

Then along came digital cameras and photography organization suddenly became a lot easier.

But I still had the box under the bed. Pictures, cards, awards, keepsakes all jumbled together. I could never find the picture I wanted when I wanted it.

So  I decided to do something about it. I bought these pretty photo boxes from Winners with the nifty index card dividers

but that’s as far as I got.

The pictures and the boxes have been sitting on my dining room table for a month and a half.

I had a problem.

You could call it picture project paralysis.

  • i couldn’t decide how to organize them – by child? by date? by occasion? by season?
  •  I’ve already mentioned how melancholy I get looking at old pictures
  • add the rain – the buckets of rain – soggy, sopping, soaking rain.
  • plus dh and kids would drop in and “help” – “Look at this!” “Do you remember that?” “Wasn’t I cute” which effectively undid any type of order I was trying to achieve.
  • it was all a little overwhelming

Until yesterday …

I finally bit the bullet and tackled it head-on.

I had an impetus (no, not a new baby – not even a grandchild -yet 🙂

It’s this basket.

a new project  – inspired by

A 10 cent sale – yes 10 cents! sale at Michaels – stickers, ribbons, cute little tins to store things, pretty papers – oh it was perfect!! Plus some old magazines, new markers, glue and a sketch pad.

I’m ready!

But –  I promised myself that I wouldn’t tackle something new until I  finished the current project.

Aren’t you proud of me?

I am – inordinately, I’m afraid.

🙂

This isn’t an elaborate scrapbooking project – the operative word is simple: to-do lists, weather reports, little sketches, recipes, pictures from old magazines, everyday events.

I’d love if you have any ideas or links – thanks!!

Hooray hooray hooray! It’s enough to make this beach girl’s heart sing.

I better get cracking on that picture project.

Have a wonderful day my friends!

Yes, I wouldn’t wait on grandchildren to provide impetus for larger projects. They are, I suspect, several years away. And I have it on very good authority.

  2. O how I’d love some rain! Maybe we’ll see some here in a few months…February or March…I’ve got a similar box of photos that is in serious need of organizing….hmmmm.I’ll be interested to hear your impressions of M.F.K. Fisher. She has a style all her own but so engaging, very descriptive (at least to me).

  3. Kathie, I so enjoy your blog and your beautiful photography. And I totally relate to your picture paralysis! 🙂 I get out my photos to organize them, and hours later after looking through them, remembering and sighing, laughing, and tearing up, I haven’t accomplished a thing (except to enjoy good memories). I need to buckle down, get some good, motivating supplies, and do it. I understand about the beachiness, too, having been raised on the coast. I went there this past week only to meet (like you) stormy weather. So, I didn’t step foot on the beach.Glad your weather is looking up, and have fun with your photos!Susan

It seems like so many of us have the same projects called photos. And now that I’m blogging, I’m not getting to any photo albums. It’s pouring cats and dogs and I’m watching to many Olympics. But soon that will be over.

  5. Last year I put on my daughter’s bikini and got flat on the patio chaise lounge in a down pour. It felt great! Of course it was also very warm out, so it felt like a warm shower all over my body. Thank heavens my yard is private and no one was at home to see me. I’m glad I did this once in my life.If I was where you live, I’d come over during a rain storm and drag you outside to run around like a total nut with me!

I’m in the same place as you-I have boxes of pictures (years and years worth) that I’ve never done anything with. We’re talking going back to when my babies started coming-16 years ago!I love the boxes and index cards idea-I hope I can find something like that here in my neck of the woods.Have fun! 🙂

  8. The rain looks like our Canada Day torrent! But I sure didn’t put any picture albums or scrapbooks together! LOL. Sigh. My unorganized mess of those is the one chore that never ever seems to get done.
