early morning

I’m sitting in front of the fire, with a  grey kitten on my lap,

sharing space with a shiny new laptop.

It’s been a wee learning curve but I’m slowly progressing.

I like Windows 7 but my old copy of Paint Shop Pro doesn’t. It kept crashing all the time I was working on my new winter header. Apparently it’s incompatible with Windows 7.

I thought I would have to buy new photo editing software but I did a bit of online research and found a free image and photo editing software called Paint.net

I’m very impressed. It has all the functionality of Paint Shop Pro and it’s easy to use.

I’ve cropped, straightened, brightened and added borders to my latest pictures: our early morning visitors to the bird-feeders.

Black capped chickadee

American goldfinches

and a downy woodpecker.

The sun is shining here on the Island – the first time in a few weeks.

I don’t think there is anything cheerier than early morning sunlight streaming in through the kitchen windows.

Time to get my down jacket, mitts, hat and scarf and head out for a walk.

Happy Monday!

with love,

Standard

  1. What a fantastic chickadee image! It just moved my heart so much that it almost hurt! And I love the second one, too, of the feeder in the falling snow. Very peaceful and charming. Thank you, Kathie. You bring beauty and peace into our home…not that there’s a dearth, but your version is very welcome and well-received. πŸ™‚

  2. Sorry for the loss of your computer – but it’s great to have a brand new one, isn’t it? I’d like one, too. With Windows 7 professional or ultimate (those versions have a so called xp-mode where you can, at least in theory, run older programs that are uncompatible with win7). Ah, well…About softwares… Usually you can buy an upgrade for your software for less than a full-version. Have you checked that option? Paint.net is free but not really good. Another free photo editing software is gimp (available in the net) and I hear it’s very good once you get the hang of it’s interface. I’m using Photoshop Elements which costs way less than 100 eur and is excellent (you can download a 30 day trial for free from Adobe’s website). But what’s most important is that you’re happy with what ever you’re using :)Sweet birds πŸ™‚ The chickadee looks a lot like our coal tit which I really love but haven’t seen at my feeder for a while 😦

  4. Your pictures are amazing and I am so glad you found a compatible bit of software to practice your art. I found I was all butter fingers at first with my lap top .. .but eventually the mouse became second nature. I have a new windows 7 desktop in the office but it’s not fully loaded with the business work yet . ..so I’m just playing with it..

  5. Beautiful close-ups of the birds! No matter how dismal it gets outside, our wild bird friends serve to make it a bit more cheery. Even our parakeet enjoys watching them at the kitchen window feeder. Have a blessed day in the Lord!

  7. Missed you, Kathie, but glad to know you’re all set now with a new computer! I even popped over just to make sure bloglines hadn’t tricked me again and wasn’t picking up. πŸ™‚ Always love your bird pics.

  8. It’s so nice to see you back! I’m awaiting a windows 7 upgrade to the laptop I got as a birthday gift. I’m a tad bit nervous about it. I really miss XP. As usual your pictures of your feathered friends make me smile. It looks very snowy there. We were under a chinook on the weekend so everything is very dirty and slushy.

  9. Sunshine in winter is a beautiful thing isn’t it? Glad to see you’re up on your new computer. Paint.net sounds intriguing, I will have to check that out and see how it compares to Corel.Beautiful bird pictures — I especially like the one with the snow flying around the feeder with the Goldfinches.
