fff ~ celebrations

Happy Friday! It’s time to count blessings along with Susanne at Living To Tell The Story. There’s been a lot of celebrating here on the Island this week. Wonder why? Here goes:

1. See all that beautiful snow? We’re having one of the snowiest winters in a long time. We’ve had three snow-storms this week. School was cancelled for 2 days in a row and that was reason for celebration in a lot of households across the Island this week. (at least for the children! πŸ™‚

home_winter_sm I’m sure some are tired of shovelling, but you have to admit, it’s pretty! And all our outdoor winter sports lovers are happy.

winter_collage(You might want to check in again around late March and April – ask me if I still think it’s pretty!)

2. Sophie definitely sides with those who celebrate snow. It makes her happy! She loves to frisk around in it, dig in it, roll in it and, most of all, tease Mila with it.

Mila represents another segment of the Island population – snow makes her grumpy. She wants to come with me when I’m outside taking pictures. As long as I stay on the driveway or the walks, where the snow is cleared, she’s happy. But as soon as Sophie and I take to deeper snow, she starts to protest – loudly.

She’s much happier perched on my shoulders.

MIla8A trifle inconvenient for picture-taking!

3. Spring is on its way, despite the wintry look. And that’s a reason to celebrate! There is warmth in the February sun, the daylight is lasting a little longer each day, icicles are dripping and I heard the springtime mating call of the male chickadee this morning – a sure sign that is spring is getting closer!

chickadee_winterSpeaking of bird songs, I found this very cool interactive bird call webpage. The birds are native to Minnesota but many of our birds are similar. Click through to identify all the various bird songs. There’s a chickadee on the poster and the first song is the mating call I heard this morning.

4. I wonder if you could hear the cheering from PEI this week? Our own Heather Moyse, (right) from Summerside, PEI, and Kaillie Humphries (from Calgary – there’s Susanne cheering!) took home Olympic gold in Women’s Bobsleigh.

HeatherHere’s a lovely youtube video about her and PEI. Embedding wasn’t allowed so I linked it for you. Worth watching!

(The Canadians also won Women’s Hockey but I won’t rub that in too hard – at least not until after the Men’s Hockey this afternoon πŸ™‚ )

5. More celebrating! A fun family gathering for Roger’s 60th birthday celebration.

Roger_60and 6 East Coast Music Award nominations for the boys’ band,Β  Paper Lions.

Philadelphia (nominated for Fan’s Choice Video of the Year) is one of my favourite songs on their album My Friends (nominated for Album of the Year). The song is about a family vacation we took to Philly in 1998. I love the line “Seven strong”Β  Another favourite line –Β  “Listen to the parents talk” – the kids were bored listening to us chat and visit with Roger’s sister, Lorna, and her husband, Brian. They wanted to get going and see Philly! I can just hear myself saying to them “What’s the rush?”. Sarah always likes to point out her starring line “My sister cried.” πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for dropping in! I love to see your name so please say hi in the comments.

Have a great weekend!

with love,

  1. Though I didn’t get to comment until now, I did enjoy seeing your pretty snow and fluffy birds and dog vs. cat reactions to snow — that was fun! Hope your week is going well, Kathie.

  2. I just love your winter photos. If I didn’t know better, I’d think all that snow was awesome. I am more of a Mila type person.

Lovely photo of your husband’s birthday celebration. Looks like he had a helper when blowing out the candles.

Congrats on the 6 East Coast Music Award nominations. How fun to have family memories as the basis for some songs.

    Have a happy week, Kathie.

  3. You bet I was cheering and everytime they mentioned Heather was from PEI I thought of you and wondered if she was from your area. I was especially touched when the two women talked about their solid friendship and the rocky road they started with. What an exciting weekend for Canadians at the Olympics.

A special birthday celebration….happy birthday to Roger!

Your cat makes me laugh and your Sophie is just like our Todd, he loves the snow, even going so far as tossing his toys into snow banks so that he can stick his nose in and dig them out.

The island is beautiful! It sure has been stormy (we’ve moved to the other side of the bay from you in the last year (from NS to NB…..maybe one day we end up on the island as that is where we were looking) and we’ve had our fair share of snow as well. I’ve enjoyed the sunny and warm weekend, though.

I certainly was cheering for the bobsled team. I think I cheered louder for the girls than I did when women won the hockey game. They did an awesome job as flag bearers! Super proud of them!

I hope you have a lovely week!

  5. I’m looking forward to playing with the bird poster. Cool idea! Your snow IS beautiful. We’re expecting a blizzard on Sunday and cold temps once again after we’ve had a nice week or so of warm weather. The Olympics are so fun to watch and I can’t help but cheer for our Canadian neighbors too. Love that grandpa birthday photo! God bless!

Loved the interactive bird calls page, the very sweet photo of your husband and granddaughter (Happy Birthday, Kathie’s husband!), and your sons’ song. It made me decide to buy their CD on Amazon. You must be a very proud mama.

  7. The snow is pretty – but I have to say I like only getting it once or twice a year. πŸ™‚ Enjoyed seeing the animals in it!

That bird page looks neat! I’ll have to check it out later – my husband is dozing few feet from me just now.

    Happy birthday to your husband!

Oh, I could listen to The Paper Lions all day. Can their music be purchased on iTunes?? I must check into that – they are so great!

  9. Hi Kathie, the snow really looks beautiful there. I wonder how long before it all starts to melt! I loved the interactive bird call link. It sounded to lovely to hear each one that I’m familiar with and I cannot wait to hear them soon! We’re still in Calgary until Tuesday and it’s supposed to be -28 here on Sunday morning! Back into the deep freeze again. I hope we don’t bring it home with us though. Enjoy the weekend. Blessings, Pam

So much to celebrate in your part of the world. Yea…well looks like both your men and women beat us for hockey. I’ll give you that since Hockey really is your countries big time team sport, eh…
Love all your beautiful winter shots and that’s a great photo of Roger and little grand girlie. So sweet. Congrats to your boys and the band!

  11. Beautiful photos! I do love winter and the snow, even if some people find it too much. We’ve gotten a lot of snow this year in Connecticut too, and I’ve been loving it πŸ™‚ In my latest post I shared some photos of our winter so far, in case you’re interested. Your photos are always so beautiful and picturesque – it really looks like such a lovely place!

Love the picture of Roger and Josie … so precious. My favorite line of the boys’ song … “My uncle almost got us killed …” (or something like that). Brian appreciated that shout out :>)

    • Haha Lorna – I was going to mention that but thought maybe I better not πŸ™‚ “City streets – my uncle took the wheel and almost killed us all”. Big difference between PEI traffic and Philly traffic. Such a wonderful trip – thanks for having us! Who knew it would turn into such a great song?? xoxo

Thanks for being a link to my Island! Love the winter pictures. I show them to our boys as they only get to experience the summers. Maybe it’s time to bring them back for a winter visit. Happy birthday to Roger and congratulations to Paper Lions!
PS I’m watching the men’s hockey game now… So exciting!

  16. Knowing the background of a song adds to the enjoyment!

I should have Tate have a chat with Mila about the snow. He plows right in and as a long haired cat the snow clumps and sticks to him. We would live it if he would refrain from snow adventures.

As I write this I am in my swim suit soaking up sun on our deck. Amazing warm day! (And amazing that I now consider 39 degrees F with sunshine to be warm.)
